Do I Need More Insulation?
Insulation is the best way to keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter, it will reduce the environmental impact of your home as well as your energy bills, so says the expert Illinois public adjuster, as they deal with this scenario often. However, these results can be achieved only if the insulation you have on your home is sufficiently thick for the area that you live in. Here are a few aspects to check if you want to find out whether you can improve the temperature balance in your home:
- check your attic – uninsulated attics are among the most common causes of thermal imbalance in homes, but fortunately they are quite easy and not very difficult to insulate,
- check the R-value of the insulation – if you have attic insulation, you will find the R-value printed on the insulation sheets somewhere. R-60 is the ideal value, but in many areas R-30 meets building code requirements as well, even though R-30 will not provide you the protection you need,
- check the edges of the attic, too – many buildings, especially older ones, are fitted with attic insulation that does not run wall to wall, leaving plenty of space for the air to move,
- check whether the roofing cover has a protective finish – reflecting heat back before it even reaches the attic is the best way to protect your interior spaces from heating up, so if you live in a hot area and your roof does not have this type of protection, you probably need it.
